Methaqualone is a sedative and hypnotic medication. It was sold under the brand names Quaalude and Sopor among others, and sold as a combination drug under the brand name Mandrax which contained 250mg methaqualone and 25mg diphenhydramine within the same tablet. Commercial production of methaqualone was halted due to widespread abuse and addictiveness. It is a member of the quinazolinone class.

The sedative–hypnotic activity of methaqualone was first noted in 1955. In 1962, methaqualone was patented in the United States by Wallace and Tiernan.Its use peaked in the early 1970s for the treatment of insomnia, and as a sedative and muscle relaxant.

Disease Background

An overdose can lead to nervous system shutdown, coma and death. Additional effects are delirium, convulsions, hypertonia, hyperreflexia, vomiting, kidney failure, coma, and death through cardiac or respiratory arrest. It resembles barbiturate poisoning, but with increased motor difficulties and a lower incidence of cardiac or respiratory depression. The standard single tablet adult dose of Quaalude brand of methaqualone was 300 mg when made by Lemmon. A dose of 8000 mg is lethal and a dose as little as 2000 mg could induce a coma if taken with an alcoholic beverage.

TEST PROCEDURE FOR Methaqualone (MQL) Test

Bring tests, specimens to room temperature (15-30°C) before use.

Remove the test from its sealed pouch, and place it on a clean, level surface. For best results, the assay should be performed within one hour.

Using the provided dropper, transfer 3 drops of specimen (approximately 120 µL) to the specimen well (S) of the device and start the timer.

Avoid trapping air bubbles in the specimen well (S), and do not add any solution to

the result area.

As the test begins to work, color will migrate across the membrane.

Wait for the colored band(s) to appear. The result should be read at 5 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 8 minutes.
